The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) is preparing to submit a proposal to the Australian government outlining a plan to support Australian industry's construction of the Japanese Soryu-class submarine if selected to meet the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN) requirement for Future Submarines, an MoD spokesman confirmed to IHS Jane's on 1 October.

The spokesman said that the Australia-build proposal is one of three construction alternatives that the MoD is preparing on request of the Australian government before Canberra's selection of a platform to replace the RAN's existing Collins-class submarines under the SEA 1000 programme. Selection is due in 2016.

Speaking on 1 October the MoD spokesman said, "In relation to collaboration on the Australian submarines the Australian government has requested us to study three options: build in Australia, build in Japan and a hybrid option, to build in Australia and Japan.
